Why is Gutter Cleaning so Important? It’s Autumn, which means it’s time to talk about gutters. Like many homeowners, you may take your gutters for granted. However, it’s important to remember that the gutters are part of your roofing system designed to guide water away from your home. The roof drives water to the gutters, and the gutters direct it away from your house. If this system malfunctions, water can seep into the home and cause massive damage. You may think that a gutter full of leaves, sticks and debris is no big deal, but that build up can stay for a long time, causing water to back up into the home. In addition, pests, rodents, and mold can take up residence in the debris. This build up also makes a great place for the honeycombs of bees to start. Instead of paying a few hundred for gutter cleaning, you could end up paying thousands in wood rot repair, roof repair, siding repair, and more! Also, if a gutter weighed down with debris breaks, replacement can be costly. Not to mention, you might be showered with a rain of debris and spiders etc! To DIY or not to DIY? So now you need to clean your gutters, but should you do it yourself? Like all DIY projects, the answer depends on your skill and bravery. We recommend only cleaning your own gutters if you’re familiar with doing work on a ladder. It can be very dangerous to handle tools and debris while up in the air, and many injuries happen this way. If you have a particularly high roof or tricky gutter covers, we recommend calling a professional for sure.

That picture just scares me to death. I am probably about that man's age and I can't see myself getting up on the roof. I would much rather hire someone for safety reasons.

My wife and I noticed that our gutters have been getting clogged from all the leaves lately, so thanks for sharing this. I like your point about only trying to clean your own gutters if you have experience with ladders. I'm not sure if either one of us can handle that job at our age, so we might look for a professional in town to help us.

I never took into account that not maintaining the gutters could make the debris stuck on it become a resting place for pests and rodents. It made me scared since I don't any pest in my house. With that in mind, I might hire a professional to check the gutters even if I don't see any visible problem with it. It's better to prevent things from happening instead of repairing it. Thanks for the information!

Thanks for the interesting article about gutter cleaning. It's nice to know that you should get a professional if you have a particularly high roof. This seems ideal especially if you don't have the right tools or safety equipment to clean or even inspect a gutter.
